The problem: The iOS device is not able to connect to the PPTP VPN using the 3G network

Resolution: Change the APN settings on the iOS device to the following:

for Telecom NZ: internet.telecom.co.nz

for Vodafone NZ: www.vodafone.net.nz

for 2Degrees NZ: internet

NOTE: After applying the fix as described below you might need manually re enter the APN setting on the iPhone.

To apply the fix you will need the following tool:

Creating a new configuration profile

Launch iPhone Configuration Utility and choose File > New Configuration Profile.
Fill out the required details in the General section of the configuration profile:
Select the advanced settings section and enter the necessary Access Point Name (APN) details provided by your carrier. If these settings are incorrect, the device may be unable to access data using the cellular network.

Installing a configuration profile

Connect the device to a USB port on your computer and wait for the device to appear in the devices list in iPhone Configuration Utility.
Select the device. Then click the Configuration Profiles tab.
Select the configuration profile you're about to install from the list, and then click Install.
On the device, tap Install to install the profile.

Note: Configuration profile might list ‘APN’ instead of ‘Advanced’, and after installing profile, users will also have to change the Tethering APN address manually in phone as well. It appears to default this back to WAP. VPN won’t work when tethered without this change.
